The blazer is one of the most essential pieces of the male wardrobe. Descended from greatness, it’s a great piece of clothing that all too often gets relegated to the back of the closet as ‘too dressy’. However, it’s not as if you need to constantly be wearing a full suit to be able to make a blazer work for you.

With that in mind, EveryGuyed has compiled a simple list for ‘How to Wear a Blazer’, that should serve you well, and hopefully inspire everybody out there to experiment more with this oft misused, and maligned garment.

The blazer is a true gentlemanly piece of clothing. It’s been worn by everybody, from great heroes like Washington and Bonaparte, to great dandies like Brummell and Wilde; and while they might not have called them blazers, their ‘surcoats’ were the spiritual ancestors of the blazer, as we know it today.

Originally a gentleman’s only piece that became a part of everyday clothing, the blazer is cut similarly to the jacket component of a suit. The difference is that the blazer is typically a little bit more casual, and the designer is given a lot more latitude in construction. Details like shank buttons, peaked lapels, and other little flourishes are often characteristic of a blazer.

Sort of the schoolmaster look; this works best with a tweed, or navy blazer. Looking every bit the academic, you’ll be evoking memories of fall afternoons on the college quad.

Plenty of girls love that semi-academic look, so pair your blazer with a pair of slim Levi’s and a white dress shirt with the collar undone. A tie here is optional, but if you feel the need to wear one, pick a necktie with college stripes or crests to carry the theme. Don’t forget that perfect final touch, a dog-eared copy of your favorite English lit book.

This is a combination that can be surprisingly tricky to pull off. Many men buy a blazer then spend the rest of their life trying to find matching slacks. Here’s a tip: they don’t exist. Blazers are made as blazers, and suits are made as suits, so don’t worry about it. The goal here is a casual look, so go for more contrast rather than entirely matching.

Try this on for a look; navy blazer, tan khakis, and a crisp white dress shirt. Not feeling it? Try a tweed blazer, black slacks, and a crisp blue shirt for a Nat King Cole inspired look. Have fun and play around with different arrangements until you find some looks that works for you.

A classic fall option, it’s as essential to autumn living as scarves and playoff baseball. The button up shirt gives your blazer the structure it needs, while the sweater keeps you warm and builds layering.

Grab a pair of nice jeans (no holes or distressing here), a plain wool sweater, and a button up shirt. Wear them. Dead simple, but if this option feels a little conservative for you, liven it up with a pair of Chuck Taylors to add youth to the look.

Recently, fashion forward celebrities have made the blazer an acceptable black tie choice, and for once this is an instance where the average guy can pull it off with confidence.

Pair a tweed blazer with a pair of black slacks, formal shoes, a crisply pressed white dress shirt, and a black self-tied bow tie for a very modern, high class look. While it’s not entirely acceptable for the most staid of black tie functions, it’s a brilliant choice for formal night on the town, or for those dates where a simple sweater and jeans will not do.

With girls, this is called the ‘boyfriend blazer’ look. On guys it’s called awesome. While the title of the entry might have you skeptical, and envisioning Miami Vice, fashion forward men need not fear this option.

A larger, unstructured blazer with a flashy liner is needed for this look. Roll up the sleeves, to let the liner show, and wear it as a sort of jacket. Complete the outfit with sneakers, a t-shirt, slim jeans, and a disaffected look. Admittedly a very youth-oriented, fashion-forward combination, but on the right guy it looks great and really gets people’s attention.

WARNING THIS MAY APPLY TO YOU… !!!!

We get it. There were very few reasons for you to dress nicely in college, since chances were, you were going to get laid by no matter what you wore if enough alcohol was factored into the equation; but if you’ve recently graduated, your wardrobe needs to graduate with you, because outside that academic bubble the standards start to get higher.

So to help you go from beer-bonging to board room, we have Everyguyed’s top 5 college fashion habits to drop, presented to you in no particular order since, let’s be honest here, all of these habits need to go.

A couple of months ago, yours truly was sitting in a room full of college students and the question “Yo, who’s going commando right now?” was asked. Five people raised their hands, convinced that “I haven’t done my laundry in a couple of weeks…I mean months” was a reasonable explanation. You should never, ever be one of these people.

Start doing your laundry, get your girlfriend to do it (& if she does, marry her already!), or hire a cleaning service, we don’t really care what option you choose, but wearing dirty clothes should never be one of them.

Hanging up your letterman jacket for good is a tough time in every man’s life, but everybody needs to do it at some point. This goes for college and high-school (especially high-school) crest/emblem/logo-encrusted sweats, bags, hats, jackets, scarves and shirts as well.

This all may seem a bit extreme, but strutting around in school swag when you’re no longer attending it will make you look like a perpetual student. Trust us, no self-respecting man wants to go out to a bar and be mistaken as part of the drunken frat-pack in the corner.

There is a plethora of minor changes you can make in your daily routine that can seamlessly upgrade your style from student to man with relatively little effort.

For instance, unless you are a pro-skater, overly baggy pants are generally to be avoided. Check the fit of all of your pants and grab a couple of new pairs of dark washed jeans, khakis, and dress pants, along with a classy leather belt or two.

Instead of automatically slipping on your sneakers before going out, choose a pair of casual loafers, boat shoes, or oxfords. Finally, start wearing a blazer or a nice leather jacket instead of the usual hoodie when you go out.

Gone are the days where it’s perfectly ok to roll out of bed, grab something clean-looking off the floor, and begin your day. Now that your days of communal bathrooms in residence halls are far behind, you can ditch the bottle of Axe 3-in-1 and begin to incorporate a larger range of men’s care products into your morning routine. Investing in quality products tailored to your hair and skin type is a good foundation to build on.

Here are some items that all could potentially fill the aforementioned blank:
Converse Chuck Taylors, fitted baseball caps, long dangling lanyards and/or chains, ‘artfully’ ripped clothing, neon colors, studded belts and/or wrist cuffs, overgrown haircuts, cheap plastic knockoff sunglasses, beanies, and any Marvel comic graphic t-shirts.

Keep in mind that this article is not one of the Ten Commandments, and the items mentioned above are not banned under pain of death. Wearing your Chuck Taylors every now and then, or a beanie when its cold outside is perfectly understandable, but slowly fazing these pieces out is a good step in the right direction.

Updating your current look to a more mature version can be relatively easy if you know which old habits you should cut, and which ones to keep and upgrade. One should always dress as one wants to be perceived.

• Graduating from college means that your appearance needs to graduate as well.
• Clean clothes are a must, there is no such thing as ‘kind of’ dirty
• Avoid wearing an abundance of college and high-school emblazoned clothes
• Making minor upgrades to your everyday wardrobe can yield surprisingly noticeable results
• Your appearance is an investment you should begin taking seriously

Tips for wearing a denim jacket are simple.

• Never ‘double up’ on denim. If you’re wearing a denim jacket, that means no denim jeans, and definitely no denim shirts. If you’re not sure go with khaki or corduroy pants.
• If you must mix denims, mix up the washes. Extremely dark wash jeans and a faded shearling-lined jacket is a great example.
• Never wear your jacket with shorts. No exceptions.
• Try pairing your jacket with a stiff pair of khakis and a dress shirt for a casual Friday look, or ragged cords and a t-shirt for a grunge-inspired casual outfit.
• To preserve the wash, treat the jacket as you would if it were a pair of jeans. Wash infrequently, and expect some shrinkage with hot-water washes.
• Don’t wear the jacket too often, unless you want to be known as ‘that denim jacket guy’, which is a terrible thing to be known as.

Geek chic glasses, considered retro appearance glasses, are blasting from the past and setting the 2011 fashion trend into a frenzy. Pronounced “geek sheek”, these glasses are based on the “geek” stereotype where geeks often wear huge black thick rimmed glasses, shirts containing hidden injokes and carry cute accessories.

It’s a fashion trend that has been gradually growing during the past few years but only in 2010 and this year, can it be claimed as the latest “must-have”. It’s described as sleek, smooth and sophisticated with a retro feel that doesn’t feel out of place. The glasses beautifully accentuate the curves of your face bringing out of the best of your appearance, which is exactly why many celebrities and normal people are gushing over them.
